Four Things You’re Doing To Stay Fat

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Jimmy Smith The fitness industry is flood with information these days; its a good problem to have since knowledge is power. The downside to all of this readily available information is that we suffer from an information overload. It is so easy to get information that we add every new method we read about into our daily training. The one resounding question I hear is Why am I not getting the gains I want? This is actually very easy to answer; most people arent as advanced as they think they are. Theres a reason people arent getting the gains that they want, here they are. 1) Lack of Program Design Can you really say that youre following a properly planned program? What I mean is, do you perform full body session for 2 weeks then decide you want to really improve that deadlift so you go and train like a powerlifter? Do you know where you plan to be with your training in 12 weeks? 16 weeks? Dont follow programs out of the magazines, set goals then follow them 2) Too Much Aerobic Training Are you still doing your steady state or long duration cardio? If you answered yes I bet you will also answer yes to the following questions. Are you struggling to lose fat despite your efforts? Do you notice rapid muscle loss? Long duration aerobic activity has directly been linked to higher cortisol levels, which lead to fat gain and muscle loss. Cut it out. 3) No Prehab Work You have a nagging injury, a pain that keeps limiting your training. Its pretty common that people dont perform prehab work and just assume itll go away. Performing prehab work at the beginning or end of each session will add structural balance to our body and allow us. This will ensure long-term progress and growth and just make you feel better. Take the Chicken Little The sky is falling approach and do your prehab after every session. 4) Youre still performing body part training It still confuses me why everyone and their mother (literally) are copying bodybuilder body part training. I know, they do it to get big muscles so I should do it too. Well can you rest and use the drugs they use? How often are you hitting each muscle per seven-day cycle? Frequency is the real deal people and the key for growth; its here to stay. 5) Youre doing the same all routines Do what youve always done, get what youve always gotten Its the quote in front of Ronnie Colemans treadmill and it needs to be in every gym in the country. It could be cardio, weights, pilates, stretching, yoga, spinning, whatever you want to do but if you continue to do the same thing youre going to screw yourself. Even if your consistently switching exercises, sets, reps, intensity you need to be even more creative. Everything should be in your toolbox, kettlebells, powerlifting, olmypic lifting, bodybuilding methods; its your entire playground. Romance Your Wife - Ask Her Out On A Romantic Date

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Timothy Mahar If you want to romance your wife, think about how you won her heart in the first place. Your romantic relationship may have started out when you called her and asked her out on a date. When you went out for the first time, you were sweet, romantic and you tried hard to impress her. She apparently enjoyed your loving attention, because she ended up marrying you. If you want to romance your wife, it is time to start dating her again. Before you start, do a little research. What do you think your wife would like to do on a romantic date? If you decide to go to dinner and a movie, what restaurant do you think she would enjoy? What movie has she been wanting to see? If your wife enjoys a certain type of restaurant, ask your friends and coworkers for recommendations. They may also have ideas for a really good movie. After youve decided on the plans for your romantic date, call her several days in advance and ask her out. When you call her, act like you are asking her out for a first date. For example: Jack: Hi Jane? Jane: Yes? Jack: Hi, this is Jack Johnson. Jane, Ive really enjoyed the time weve spent together and I was wondering if you would be interested in going out this weekend? Jane: Jack? You mean like on a date? Jack: Yes, I thought we could both enjoy some time together. Jane: Why that does sound nice, what did you have in mind? Jack: Theres a new restaurant on Fifth Avenue that I have heard good things about. I thought we could have dinner there and then see Romance Never Dies at the movie theater. Jane: Well Jack, it sounds like you have this all planned out. That sounds wonderful. Im free Saturday night. Jack: Saturday night it is. Ill look forward to it! Jane: So will I! When the big day comes, act like its your first date. Get your car washed, select some nice clothes to wear and shower and shave just before your date. If youre wife asks what youre doing, tell her you have a hot date tonight. When it is time for your date, pull the car out front. Get out of the car and knock on the front door. When your wife answers the door, greet her and ask her if she is ready for your romantic date. When you walk her to the car, be sure to open the car door for her. Throughout your date, work hard to try to impress her, just as you would on a first date. When you arrive home after the date, walk around the car and open the car door for her. Walk her to the door. When you get to the porch, take her hands in yours and tell her that you had a very nice time and that you hope that you can do it again some time soon. Then, end your date with a sweet, romantic goodnight kiss. If you want to romance your wife, never stop dating her. Total Body Detoxification Tips and Tricks You Can Do At Home

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Denice Moffat When your body is sick in any way the pH is disrupted. Your body does whatever it can to keep up with the extra acid produced. When it cant keep up, disease happens. Disease is a breakdown of your body’s cells optimal function. Disease happens through poor eating habits, overwork, stuffing your emotions, eating too many cooked foods, too much sugar, salt, caffeine, drugs, vaccines, tension, depression, lack of proper rest, lack of exercise, environmental contamination of the air/water/food and the retention of metabolic wastes (constipation). The only effective way to “cure” disease is to eliminate the causes. Can we stop disease or reverse agonizing symptoms? Yes. How? We have to clean up our lives with optimal nutrition, special diets, cleansing programs, specific vitamins and supplements, fresh extracted juices, herbs and other natural therapies which do not harm the body over time. We must change our living habits and the way we think. We need to find a balance between the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our life. All cures come from within the central core of your body first, then it progresses outward and from the top of your body down to your feet and in reverse order in which the symptoms first occurred. So, how does one detoxify? It cant be done overnight. You took time to build those toxins up. If you go too fast, it will throw your body into a healing crisis which well tell you about at the end of this article. Plan for a four-month program. The body should be cleansed in this order: Bowels, liver, kidneys, blood and lymph. Bowel detoxificationStarting the process: Eat more fresh raw fruits and vegetables. The more varied the colors, the better and more balanced the cleanse will be. Some of my favorite fruits and vegetables to keep the body in tip-top shape include: Apples, carrots, watermelon, tayberries, raspberries, cherries, papaya, parsley, ginger, broccoli and zucchini. These provide fiber and fluid to get the bowels moving, improves oxygen utilization, helps to burn up waste products in the system, and stabilize blood pH making the body more alkaline. When the body is alkaline it has energy to fight off disease, so that it can detoxify and rebuild. Cut back on cheese, meat, poultry and refined foods. Eliminate packaged items. Eat more eggs. For chronic constipation problems, my favorite product is Natures Sunshine LBS II. It is non-addictive and can shift your bowel habits permanently with only a few months of adding it to your supplement program. Some people prefer to add in coffee enemas or colon hydrotherapy. This is good, but dont overdo the coffee enemas. Three per week should be the maximum amount for coffee enemas in the detoxification program. And if your issue is loose bowels, irritable bowel syndrome or Crohns disease, you may want to add in Bowel pathogen nosode drops for parasites and Large Intestine RET drops for emotions associated with imbalance of the bowels. Emotional RET Remedies: These wonderful homeopathic/flower essence combinations were developed by Professional Health Formulations to help with the emotional aspects of physical symptoms within the body. Seventy percent of all disease processes have some emotional component to them. So if you are doing all the right things and taking all the right drugs, supplements, and diet for something and it still isn’t working, these drops may be your ticket Note: Cooked, processed, or pasteurized fruits and vegetables are devoid of enzymes. Heat kills many vitamins and cooked fruits will make the body more acidic. Consuming three servings EACH of raw fruits, raw vegetables and cooked vegetables (thats nine servings total) is the minimum for optimal health, but you will want to take in five servings of each per day for a total of 15 servings servings/day on a detoxification program. Juicing is an easy way to get those servings in. Adding some raw beet juice and green bitter vegetables will stimulate the gall bladder to get things moving. You may also want to add in some liquid acidophilus if you have bowel issues, crave sugar, know you have yeast problems, or have had a history of taking antibiotics. Liquid vitamins and ionic mineral supplements are also helpful both in the detoxification and maintenance phases. Liver Detoxification: Once bowel movements are happening smoothly, its time to start detoxifying the liver. Increase green foods and include green drinks, beets, milk thistle and add any homeopathic detoxosode drops that are appropriate. My favorites are: Sick Building detox drops, Mercury and Amalgam, Degenerative Tissues, and Food Additive Detox Drops for eliminating Aspartame, caffeine, chocolate, food colorings, MSG, sulfites, and nitrites from your system. Intravenous chelation is the Cadillac treatment for getting rid of heavy metals from your system, but Ive found that carob powder will do quite well as well. Its cheap and available. The dose is Teaspoon once a day for 30 days. If you are struggling with allergies, anger, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, glaucoma or cancer, youll want to add in some Liver RET drops. Kidney Detoxification: Once youve completed the liver cleanse, the kidneys come next, so add in Cranberry Unsweetened Concentrate to your fruit and vegetable-rich diet. One teaspoon/day for six weeks. My favorite brands are Hains and Tree of Life. This product comes in 8-16 ounce bottles. Its not the juice or frozen concentrate you buy in the juice isle. Look for it in the nutritional supplements of your local health food store. Eat lots of ginger, parsley and watermelon. Kidney RET emotional remedy is added at this point if the person is experiencing nervousness, fear, anxiety, dread or worry in their personality traits. I add Myrrh Gum Powder in at this time as well to help with yeast and purification. Take up to four capsules/day for about nine weeks depending on the severity of yeast you may have in your system. Blood and Lymph Detoxification: This is the final step in the process and should occur at approximately month four of your detoxification process. Now add in some Poke Root Tincture at 12 drops/day to get the lymph moving. Signs of lymph and circulation stasis include fluid retention, fibrocystic breasts, elevated Prostate Specific Antigen and lymphatic cancers. Irish moss will help balance out the cellular salts, and keep eating that parsley. Add in teaspoon of blackstrap molasses a day for added minerals and iron. Also add in five tablets a day of American Health Papaya Enzymes to help disintegrate the remaining tar of fermented proteins built up in your intestines over the years. You should be feeling pretty good now, but adding in Spiritual RET drops helps to integrate the physical healing with the mental and spiritual healing. So, how do you know when you are detoxifying too quickly? Symptoms of a healing crisis can include: Fever, swollen limbs/face, headaches, mobilization of mucous, weakness, weight-loss, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and other digestive disorders, pains resurfacing, worsening of existing symptoms, rapid pulse, skin eruptions, and some say they feel like their world is “collapsing”. What is the difference between a healing crisis and illness? You know when you are having a healing crisis because: The crisis usually lasts only one to three days. At the end of the healing crisis you feel much better than before the healing crisis occurred. You are eating all the right things and up until the healing crisis have had a good attitude. You know you are making changes in your lifestyle and are working on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of your life. You are mentally prepared to get through the healing. You may have just pampered yourself with some kind of bodyworkthis sometimes stimulates a healing crisis. This is a good thing. If you are truly sick, the symptoms above feel awful as time progresses. The symptoms are more than transient and more than mild. Ways to work through a healing crisis: Drink lots of water, treat yourself to a massage or hot bath, do daily caster oil packs over your liver for 3-5 days, fast for a day or two, get a chiropractic adjustment, pray and do some attitudinal work and find a support team. Tips for Having More Good Hair Days

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Connie Limon Who doesn’t feel better on a ‘good hair day’? Sometimes they come right out of the blue - often just as soon as you make up your mind to get a new cut or color because you can’t do anything else with it! Why is it so hard to get your hair to do what you want? THE HISTORY OF HAIR The mysteries of maintaining beautiful hair should have been uncovered by now, but for many women finding a simple way to keep their hair looking wonderful is as elusive as it was to women centuries before. The desire for beautiful hair is not new. Ancient Egyptians shaved their heads and wore elaborate, heavy, braided wigs to achieve perfection. European history also abounds with torturous hair styles including the ornate, powdered styles wrapped around frames and horsehair which attracted vermin. Today, fashion still influences a woman’s hairstyle but that doesn’t mean you have to subject your hair to needless damage. Take advantage of the tips below on caring properly for your hair. WASHING AND CONDITIONING Hair is not a living part of your body. However, your hair still needs proper care for optimum health and beauty. One of the key elements to having shiny, healthy hair is to allow the natural oils in the scalp to lubricate it. The hair closest to the scalp benefits from natural sebum oils the most while longer hair can become dry and brittle from a lack of these oils. Shampoo, no matter what exotic ingredients it’s made up of, performs a simple job of removing excess oils; pollution and styling product build up from the hair. All of your hair needs gentle cleansing but it is the top two or three inches that is most weighed down with natural oils and dulling hair products. Concentrating the washing in that area will reduce the amount of oils removed from longer areas of hair which can be over dried from the stripping of oils and extended contact with shampoo. Conditioning on the other hand should be used sparingly, if at all, on the top inches of the hair while concentrated on the ends. Conditioning is an important step to replace needed oils and provide protection from styling agents such as blow dryers and irons. STYLING Your hair will look its most beautiful when you choose a style that requires the least amount of heat and product damage. Protecting your hair with conditioners is an asset, but choosing a style that suits the texture of your hair will eliminate the need for more torturous styling tools. Frizzy and dry hair can benefit from the application of silicone based products. Bear in mind that a little goes a long way and concentrate the product on the ends of your hair. When you blow your hair dry keep the blow dryer at least six inches from your hair to prevent excessive damage from the heat. Blow drying in the direction of the shaft (down the length of hair) will create a smoother appearance. COLORING and PERMING If you use chemicals in your hair you should make sure your hair is in a healthy condition before applying the treatment. Overuse of these treatments can damage hair beyond repair and affect the results of the products. CUTTING YOUR HAIR Your hair will look shinier and feel thicker when you remove dried and split ends. Trimming the hair every 6 to 8 weeks will keep it looking its best. Taking simple steps to maintain healthy hair will put you on track to more ‘good hair days’ than you ever thought possible! Take Her to the Best Spring Party of the Season

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Shayla Moore Spring is definitely in the air, and the sap of all red-blooded males just starts to fizz around this time of year. As the birds start cheeping and the buds start flowering, a guys thoughts turn to flirting and fun. No doubt your woman is feeling some of the same frisky thoughts what better time to whisk her away on a special break just for the two of you? With the Spring holiday approaching, its time to think fast about where to go and what to do. Of course Spring Break is a huge pull for thousands of young Americans with resorts in Florida, Hawaii or Mexico drawing crowds of merry partygoers every year. But its not just for the teenagers! Why not take your woman along to one of the hot-spots a dose of warm sun and beach side relaxation is usually enough to put a girl in the mood! The Spring Break parties are notorious for wild behavior with a little persuasion girls will flash at strangers for a string of beads. If you havent remembered to pack any, perhaps you can persuade your woman to gather a few strings herself. After a few pina coladas, the fun atmosphere could be enough to bring out the exhibitionist in her, and of course youll be right by her side to make sure shes safe. In such sensual and wanton surroundings, it wont be surprising if you both feel a little more daring and reckless than usual. Spring Breakers are famously free with their affections, and its the perfect place to find an adventurous couple to join you for some group fun. Even if you want to keep it fairly tame and just encourage your woman to try out kissing another girl, Cancun could be a great place to do it! The emphasis is on casual, brief fun with no strings, and with such large crowds from all over youre virtually guaranteed not to have to bump into them again. Many of the clubs hold dares, wet T-shirt comps and naughty party games to get you both fired up, and the parties continue long into the night. Even if you dont want to join in with the crowds, just a chance to escape from your everyday lives is often enough to recharge those sexual batteries. Why not buy your girl some special underwear or a bikini that you can give her on the first night you arrive. Make sure that if you want to join in some of the more risqu activities that your woman knows its just for fun if shes not happy about it then dont push the issue. She might come round when she sees how much fun there is to be had and if not, all that spring passion will be reserved just for you in the hotel room! Lucky fellow. The Case For Internships

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Michael Levine America may be the Land of Opportunity, but this is also the land of the Big Trade-Off. Sure, you can have that nice house, but youre going to have to become a mortgage slave to keep it. You can drive that fancy sports car, but youll have to fork over an insurance premium as hefty as the GNP of some Third World nations. In the Bible it says, in life, if you want honey, you get bees with stingers. For anything worth having, theres price to pay. Its the same with a career. Most professional positions require experience, but in this classic Catch-22, how does a young college student or graduate gain that experience? Well, its just as Mark Twain said, Never let school interfere with our education. I believe the intern programs in place at companies like Coca-Cola, Proctor & Gamble, CBS, and mine provide the best chance for young people to enter and grow in many professions. Although the work is demanding, with little or no immediate financial return, interning is a textbook example of a win-win situation. When a young person comes to my public relations company and tells me hes willing to intern, a distinctly modern social contract is entered into. Though he is not a servant, and I am not a teacher, if he does some unpaid work, well do some teaching. The company gets the opportunity to observe eager and smart young people who energize the company. Like a farm team, interns are prospective employees, and we get to watch them in action. For the intern, the rewards are far greater. Firstly, most interns are college students, and nearly all receive valuable college credit for their services. Beyond that, interning teaches the neophyte how to function in a complex, real-life adult business environment. Mike Tyson could have studied boxing manuals his whole life, but he would never have become the Champ if he hadnt stepped into a real ring. No classroom can substitute for visceral, palpable learning in an authentic setting. Problem solving, initiative, creativity, and cooperation are well fostered as the intern struggles to carve a niche for him/herself. To make it as an intern, one must embody the qualities of any effective worker, and the rewards go far beyond the merely educational. Many interns go on to highly successful careers. Interning is practical. In an ever-tightening job market, it provides career preparation, enables a young professional to develop marketable skills and demonstrate potential to a prospective employee. But beyond the practicalities, theres a bigger picture that needs to be addressed. For too many, America has become the Land of the Freeloader and the Home of the Lazy. People seem to want it all, right here right now, with a minimum of effort. Dreams of winning this weeks Lotto game have supplanted that dream of building a life built of Freuds twin peaks, Lieben and Arbeiten, love and work. The old-fashioned work ethic is, if not dead, then surely on the critical list. America says it wants to be No. 1, but many refuse to expend the effort to get there. We can do it, but theres only one way, and thats simply to work for it, and work hard. For centuries, apprenticeship was the equivalent to todays technical college. The spirit of apprenticeship is still alive in interning. If Americas work force whined a little less, and had a little more of the initiative of my highly motivated interns, maybe this country could find a semblance of its former glory. Yes, they do not get paid. But as my interns have so brilliantly demonstrated, nobody works for free. It’s Not Just Cellulite It’s Fat, Here’s What To Do About It

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Gregg Hall Ninety-five percent of women today will develop cellulite in their bodies sometime during their lives. Cellulite is fat. With a combination of fluid retention and fatty tissue, cellulite appears on the thighs of women. As a woman gains weight, her fat cells begin to swell, but her connective tissue remains the same. Because they have a different cellular makeup than their male counterparts, women inherit a greater risk for cellulite problems. No woman wants cottage cheese thighs, but cellulite remains a veritable challenge. Women of any age can get cellulite, but it is more common among people as they age. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not directly connected to one’s weight. It is noted, however, that those who gain and lose weight regularly have a tendency to acquire cellulite easily. The fat cells in the lower part of a women’s body tend to store fat six times quicker than cells on the upper torso, while, at the same time, these cells let go six times less quickly. Losing weight on the abdomen also changes the upper half of the body. Are there ways to make the dreaded dimpling appearance of cottage cheese thighs less obvious? Certainly, but the first defense must be to repair the areas where cellulite has already taken up residence. Learning to strengthen and hydrate both the cells of the body and the connective tissue, as well, is a good beginning for repairing body cells. Cellulite is defined as, “fat that has pushed through cell walls into the middle layer of skin and shows through the surface.” Poor circulation in one’s body allows cellulite freedom to prosper. Therefore, to reduce the appearance of cellulite, it is paramount to increase the circulation in the defined area. Cellulite is composed of lymph fluid and toxins that are trapped in the skin’s connective tissue. When the dreaded cellulite is just beginning, combat it immediately with your regular routine. The best cardiovascular exercises include walking, running, and weight lifting. Plan a healthy menu. A sensible diet is one with plenty of vegetables (especially leafy green ones) with an abundance of fruit. A Healthy Life Style Remember to hydrate your body throughout the day. Drink lots of water, at least 64 ounces a day. Smoking is bad for you. Don’t smoke, but if you are smoking now, quit. Regarding the development of cellulite, smoking restricts the flow of blood, causing sluggish circulation, preparing the body for the development of cellulite. Avoid processed foods and saturated fates (butter, margarine, and animals fats). Refrain from the use of alcoholic beverages, coffee, teas, diet soda, and junk food. Consume healthy foods and you will be healthy. Try a two-week detox with meals that include one serving of protein (lean beef, skinless chicken, or grilled fish) with lots of vegetables. Dry skin brushing is an excellent cellulite fighter. This process exfoliates the dermis layer of skin, removing dead skin cells. It boosts circulation to the skin and stimulates the flow of lymph, improving the release of toxins through the skin. Dry skin brushing assists in the growth of new cells. Two more suggestions: 1. End your day with a cool shower, if you can tolerate it. Cold rinse (a slow turn in the shower to constrict the flow of blood and improve skin tone.) 2. Take glucosamine supplement every day. Glucosamine aids the body in repairing damage to the dermis layer, as well as the connective layer of the skin. Cellulite creams and lotions can help make the appearance of cottage cheese less noticeable, but these creams are not miracle workers. Cellulite creams cannot improve the condition of the skin with a complete healing that is permanent. If you choose a cellulite cream, consider one that contains alpha hydroxy acids because these acids reduce the unsightly appearance of cellulite by improving the level of elasticity in the skin and strengthening the connective tissues. Losing Weight: Healthier Wallet

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

By Michael Lewis Lose Weight - Get A Break —————————————- The American Obesity Association (AOA) wants to give new meaning to getting a deduction. Losing weight should get you a deduction. The non-profit advocacy organization is trying to change IRS policy to allow taxpayers to deduct the cost of weight loss treatments. The AOA and 10 other organizations (including Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, several pharmaceutical companies, professional societies, and consumer advocate groups) petitioned the IRS last year to reverse the revenue ruling that includes weight loss among such other non-deductible categories as cosmetic surgery and health clubs, and until recently, smoking cessation programs. Weight Loss Programs Should Get The Same Break as Smoking Cessation Programs —————————————- The AOA would like to see weight loss treatments included in the same category of allowable medical expenses like treatments for heart disease or stroke. According to Downey, the IRS responded to the petitionlast October by saying consideration would be given to reverse the revenue ruling if facts were provided establishing either that obesity itself is a disease,or weight loss by an obese person could prevent the onset of disease. The AOA responded with an “exhaustive submission covering both of those bases,” Downey says. “It almost gets to the point, why did we ask this question in the first place, it’s so obvious, but of course, it isn’t, there’s still a lot of misunderstanding about obesity.” The AOA wants the reversal to allow deductions for the costs of comprehensive obesity treatment, including surgery, pharmacology, behavioral counseling, and programs for the specific purpose of weight maintenance and loss. Downey says he’s “optimistic” the IRS will rule in their favor based on the strength of the evidence in their 58-page submission to the agency. Obesity Is Considered A Chronic Disease —————————————– Chris Rosenbloom, PhD, RD says obesity is considered a “chronic disease, it has actually been classified a disease. It’s probably the biggest chronic health problem that we have in the United States.” Rosenbloom is an associate professor of nutrition at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Rosenbloom says obesity can lead to high blood pressure, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and possibly even certain types of cancers. According to the AOA, about 55% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. The health care costs for treating diseases caused by obesity, such as diabetes and heartdisease, was over $100 billion in 1999 alone. Medicare And Medicaid Next? —————————————– Downey says the AOA is “working with some of the managed care associations and Medicare. We’re going to be looking at Medicaid hopefully in the near future. We obviously want to see them provide better coverage.” But Downey says the IRS and the insurance industry are two very different issues. The IRS is more cut-and-dry, and the questions associated with it are not as complex. The IRS has to interpret obesity as a medical problem. Until it does, it is doubtful that tax relief will come. Even though medical deductions qualify after seven anda half percent of your adjusted gross income. If you were making $100,000 a year, you would have to have over $7,500 before you could deduct it. Most people don’t. Downey agrees “it’s a very small category, but in our view, particularly for people who need bariatric [obese-specific] surgery, which is going to be $8,000 to $12,000, or so and frequently is not covered by insurance plans, thatprobably is the individual who is going to benefit from this change. Most middle class people would have to go to a lot of Weight Watchers meetings to get up to that level.” There has been a 40% increase in the number of obese people since 1980 and the incidence of obesity in children is rising. 8 “Thurvival Skills” for 05

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By JoAnn Hines Just what is a thurvival skill? Its a skill that lets you thrive and survive at the same time. In today’s economy its not enough to just be good. You need to be better than your counterparts and colleagues. Its all about creating an action plan to keep you name in the limelight and on the top of the list. What list am I talking about? The one that says call X, hire X or X is the best person for the job. Or event he list that reads we can get rid of everyone but X. Is this person you? It could be. It takes a particular skill set. 1. Flexibility-You need to go with the flow. There are things you can’t change so be prepared to accept the consequences and move on. Be adaptable no matter what the circumstances and don’t let adversity get you off your game plan. 2. Accessibility - Opportunities happen in a flash. You need to be where people can reach you: cell, phone, fax, and email, whatever. Let you number two person know how to reach you in case that once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself. If people need you, respond that day if at all possible. If you don’t, someone else will and you will have lost your edge. 3. Visibility - Who are you? Can people find you? Do an ego search on GOOGLE. Type in your name and see what shows up. At the very least, you should see some basic listing about yourself. So you want to improve the odds of your being found? Get a personal website and use your name as the domain. 4. Credibility - Are you an expert at something? If not, why not? Its easy to become one and then use need to use that expert status to your advantage. The more credentials you have in your CV, the more power it wields when you seek out opportunities. 5. Connectivity - Who can you call when you need help? Remember its a quid-pro-quo world so just don’t start calling people when you are in a bind. They probably won’t call back if you already haven’t established a relationship. 6. Your Me-factor - You simply have to think about yourself. Yea, I know the cheers for the team and all that stuff. Well, the cold hard truth is that the team isn’t going to cut it when your you-know-what is on the line. You need to look out for numero uno. Allocate time for personal enhancement and enrichment every day. Don’t get caught up in the party line that you are too busy to manage your own career. 7. Technologically savvy Big deal. Do you know how to use email? Do you know how to use it to your advantage? Do you use it to keep in contact, solidify a relationship, alert someone as to how and where you can be reached or get new business? Your technology skills will make you or break you in coming years so spend a little time developing this particular knowledge base. 8. Investment programs-Not your 401K or IRA investments, but investments in you as a person. What’s going to affect your bottom line? Have you kept up with current industry technology? Do you know what skill sets are in demand for today’s top employers? Keep that knowledge base at the cutting edge and you will have leverage over your competition. If you hone these skills, you are on your way to successfully negotiating the balance of the year both employed and enjoying your job. Invest in yourself as part of your personal portfolio. Make 2005 the year of you where you can both thrive and survive. JoAnn Hines’ specialty is PACKAGING PEOPLE. FAME! How To Become a Local Celebrity

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Simone Kelly-Brown 1. Know your target market and have them feel comfortable with you! Understand what they need and want so that you can give it to them and THEN some. Having a “story” is extremely important as well, in many cases people want to identify with you. Maybe you accomplished something they are trying to and you are their inspiration. Tell them about it. Don’ t be shy. If you were in an abusive relationship, WRITE ABOUT IT, talk about it. If you just overcame a serious illness and found ways to overcome it by changing your diet, SHARE IT! If you were in debt and now you’re a big BALLER, tell ‘em how you got there! FIND THEIR PROBLEM AND HELP THEM SOLVE IT! We love information– heck you’ re getting some right now aren’t ya? 2. Do Something that Counts! Being fabulous is cute, but what are you doing for your community that makes people remember you? Host an event, volunteer; speak on topics that will uplift those in your area. 3. Continue to Build Up Your Fan Base: Collect contact info like it’s nobodies business. Every event that you have or attend, you should be collecting names, e-mails, and mailing addresses. Dont walk away missing out on potentially new clients, customers, followers, fans, etc. For those in the music industry for example, I cant tell you how many times I’ve been to a show and then realized they didnt’ even have anyone collecting email addresses or business cards. Its a wasted opportunity! You need to stay in contact with these folks who could later come to another show and buy your CD online! 4. Get out the house and WORK THAT ROOM BABY! Learn how to find interesting networking events online. Go where your target market is, not necessarily where your peers are. Read this article titled Work That Room, Baby for more info and simple tips to make networking easier for you on our website 5. Do local cable, TV, or even get your own Internet Radio Show! Start researching cable access shows in your area by calling your local cable company. Cable is very inexpensive and many folks are shocked when they find out the rates! Why not start your own Internet Radio show by going here for more info: http://radio.about.com/od/createinternetradio/a/aa100604a.htm?terms=internet+radio+show I sat down with a Give ‘N Take attendee Jude Gorgopa, Founder of Clout Et Cetera, Inc. to ask her what she thought about the topic since she is an expert in getting clout. She had these points to add to the list. 6. Have Authentic Personal Style: Becoming a local celebrity is a lot easier than you may think! Having star quality is more a matter of over-all impression than actual looks so having a knockout first impression is one giant step to stardom. What message is your image sending? Before you even open your mouth, you need to have a positive and memorable impact on people. Having authentic personal style can give you the clout to open doors to places that would otherwise remain locked or take years to enter. It’s amazing how charm, grace, and confidence can get you to the front of the line. You don’t have to be rich or wear expensive clothes. It’s all in how you work it! That’s star quality. 7. Keep yourself in front of people! Speak at events, participate in fundraising, go to networking events, get cards printed and hand them out and make sure to take advantage of photo ops and auditions. There’s no room for fear! Get known for being the professional and wonderful person that you are. It’s a hard fact that even if someone is really interested in you, they will rarely call you back. You must keep on top of your contacts and constantly develop new ones, focusing on those that will help you get to where you want to go. The most important advice is to be kind to everyone on your way up, from the receptionists to the doormen to the assistants, because you never know who you’ll meet on the way down! 8. Anyone can develop a signature style. It takes time and it takes courage, but it can be done. Finding yourself as a person has a lot to do with finding your personal style as the whole process is to basically bring the inward outward. It’s not enough to get a makeover when the old attitudes are still attached. It’s like putting fresh icing on a stale cake. If you’re going through a major transition in your life and exploring new options, you’re feeling lost and confused or just plain bored, it helps to have a coach on hand to help direct you to your goals and the image to go along with them. Jude L. Gorgopa, author, motivational speaker, life/career coach, total image consultant, and trainer is the President/Founder of Clout Et Cetera, Inc., an image and lifestyle resource for individuals, groups, and businesses that can change your attitude, your career, and your life.Look out for her upcoming book, ‘The Fundamentals of Clout: Volume One.
